So you're thinking about taking a yoga class, great! Here are some basic things to consider. Come in to your journey with an open mind and willing heart and you will be amazed at the benefits you will reap from this thing called YOGA! At Purna Yoga East we are body positive for all body types.  We are not about twisting you up as a contortionist or the latest yoga fads.  We're here to teach you a sustainable yoga practices that you can do for your entire life time.

Yoga can help you feel better if properly practiced on a regular basis. As with any endeavor the more attention and focused effort put forth the greater the returns.  You don't see and feel results just by thinking about them, something has to be done! With that said we recommend coming to class at least twice a week but don’t expect too much of yourself in the first few visits, be gentle on yourself.  Yoga is a lifelong journey and poses won’t be perfected in 1 or 2 classes. At Purna Yoga East we offer classes seven days a week in the mornings and evenings to accommodate your schedule.

Practicing mindfully, now what does that mean? It means clearing your mind from all the going ons of the day and focusing your mind with a Purna Yoga Heartfull Meditation Snack. We will teach you how to easily do this as we begin each class "centering". When your mind is focused, clear and centered then you will no longer carrying the worry and stress of the day with you into your practice. Practicing mindfully also means focusing on your breath and how your body feels in the yoga poses. When you pay attention to and feel what your body is experiencing then you will avoid forcing your body to do something it is not ready for or over stretching a muscle, tendon or ligament which could lead to injury. Your job is to listen to your body and take care of yourself throughout your class. If you feel something that doesn't seem right for you then please stop what you are doing and let your instructor know. Know, too, that your instructors are here to help you; please feel comfortable asking, should you have any questions. As we say, any sharp, shooting, stabbing, jabbing pain is a message to find another way especially if that pain is in a joint! You should feel a good gentle stretch in the belly of your muscles but not pain! Don't worry too much about this as your instructor at Purna Yoga East is there to help you and will remind you to take care of yourself and that yoga is noncompetitive and nonjudgmental. We're all here to feel a little better.

If you have areas in your body you are working with, you've recently had a procedure or surgery and or are pregnant, please let your instructor know before class. You instructor will respect your privacy and most importantly help to keep you safe, moving towards optimal health and feeling better.

Purna Yoga East is a fully equipped studio. We offer clean mats for you to use, as well as, all the other props you may need for the class you are attending. You are welcome to bring your own mat if it is clean and free of pet hairs and dirt. To support your home practice we offer colorful mats for sale at the studio as well as belts, blocks, blankets and the 3-minute eggs.

Have a light snack before coming to class if you are hungry but avoid eating a large meal. As with any exercise it will be uncomfortable for you if you have a full belly!

Yoga is the time you give yourself to care for your body, quiet and calm the mind and sooth your nervous system. Many students have described it as an hour vacation from the business of their lives. Purna Yoga East opens 15 minutes before classes begin so you have plenty of time to settle in and prepare for class. If you do arrive late just knock on the door or windows, wait and an instructor will let you in after the opening.

Yoga is noncompetitive and nonjudgmental. You may see people doing different poses to care for their body or your instructor may offer an option for you that would better support your practice. Each person is different in their needs. You also have a "get out of yoga pose free" pass to use when you need it. Don’t overdo or struggle to stay in a pose. Ask your instructor for assistance if you need it! If you feel a pose is too advanced for you or you don’t want to participate  wait for your instructor to give you an alternate pose. They will recommend an alternate pose which will give you similar benefits. Please ask your instructor if you have questions or something doesn't feel right in your body. We are here to help you.

Wear comfortable clothes that you can move around in. Bright cheerful clothing will make you feel happy and upbeat while practicing yoga. We practice barefoot.

Feel free to ask questions! We are an instructional studio so all our yoga teachers are professionally trained and will guide and assist you with your practice. We also love doing YOGA but during your yoga classes the teachers don't practice and have you simply follow along, we actually teach you how to do the poses.

Thank you for taking care of the props in the studio, these are tools meant to assist you and we appreciate you treating them respectfully.
Avoid stepping on the mat of another student when walking around the room. Think of a mat like a beach blanket. You wouldn’t traipse across someone else’s blanket; same applies to the yoga mats.

After class be sure to hydrate with water and a splash of lemon or slice of cucumber or strawberry. This allows the water to hydrate rather than cleanse the organs.

Begin to cultivate a practice at home. The more you practice yoga the more you will feel the benefits!

Consider exploring other classes and instructors. Don’t give up after one or two classes. Often another class or instructor may resonate better for you.

When you are ready, invest in your own yoga props (mat, belt, blocks, eggs, bolster, blanket) these will encourage you to use what you learn in class in your own home practice. If you travel taking a yoga strap along in your suitcase it the easiest way to relieve back stress and strain!

Again-welcome to Purna Yoga East and all that yoga has to offer YOU!  We are happily here to help you as best we can.
